Yesterday, a Mozambican man approached me at work and asked me to help translate a phone call since he didn’t speak English. I agreed, having no idea what I was walking into. What he wanted me to say still gives me chills. He asked me to tell the white man on the line that he would come to his place tomorrow with 1,000 grams of gold, and wanted to know how much he’d be offered. At that point, I had no clue how much gold that really was. The moment the buyer named his price R975,000 I started shaking. The Mozambican accepted, hung up, then offered me R200,000 to come with him. Broke as I was, I said yes and we exchanged numbers. This morning, he called with directions to a meeting. When I arrived, he said his colleague a security guard was holding the gold for him. He made a call, and within ten minutes, the guy showed up with a stunning, heavy gold brick. Me being stupid and broke, I didn’t see what was coming next, I didn’t realise that would be the last time I’d see that gold and my phone. I was hooked, lined, and sinkered. Then the scam unfolded. The man with the gold told the Mozambican he needed to buy him a cold drink (R95,000) before handing over the gold. The Mozambican claimed he had no money and turned to me, asking if I had anything. When I said no, they suggested keeping my phone as collateral. That was the last I ever saw my phone 😭😭😭😭
