People of VVT in #srilanka calculate losses & damage amounting to USD $15 million (LKR 4.5 billion) from IPKF massacre in Aug 1989 - and submit claim to #lka Reparations Office but note ultimate responsibility lies with Government of India. This is first time a detailed reparations and compensation claim has been submitted by victims for a historic mass atrocity crime in #srilanka. Read more: itjpsl.com/press-releases… (also in #tamil & #sinhala). A big issue was how to calculate the interest on the damage over the period of 35 yrs. The approach used the forced loan theory, which treats damages as a forced or involuntary loan from the victims to the #lka Government. The interest rate used is, where available, the #lka 1 year Treasury rate. This is an extremely conservative approach as it does not fully reflect the opportunity costs associated with delayed compensation or the compound damage effect of delaying compensation for decades. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk concluded his three-day visit to on Thursday with a statement reiterating key concerns long raised by Tamil victims and civil society groups, including the need for an internationally backed accountability mechanism, the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), an end to surveillance of human rights defenders, and the release of military-occupied land.

The Rajapaksas' opposition to the Tamil Genocide Memorial is the surest signal that we are on the right path recognizing the innocent civilian lives lost at the hand of this family. If confident no genocide occurred, the Rajapaksa family should fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court rather than obstructing justice and hiding from prosecution. This is their Nuremberg moment and instead of facing accountability, this family hides in luxury protected by the Sri Lankan state. It’s shameful. The crimes against humanity committed by the Rajapaksa family rival Pol Pot, Slobodan Milosevic, Heinrich Himmler, and Flicien Kabuga. It’s a badge of honor that they object to our Canadian Tamil Genocide Memorial.
