@mtt_brs Yes, there is an old finding that incumbents lose consensus on average (Paldam, 1986), and this is getting larger over time (checked data myself as motivation for some work). We have a take on a possible why in a paper (papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…) and in another work in progress.

@jburnmurdoch Our take on (one of the) why. When politicians compete on claiming who is the best, incumbents face a natural disadvantage: they have to take some blame for what goes bad, while challengers are unconstrained in claiming they could do much better. Paper: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

Three truths about social media platforms, no matter who owns them. Truth 1: Moderation is required or trolls destroy the platform. Further, without temporary bans or content removal to educate first time offenders on the guidelines they violated, more people become trolls.

The problem with unmoderated online spaces is that a few people will always ruin them. Most conflicts between Reddit can be traced to a handful of active users with a history of angry comments. A mere 0.1% of all Reddits generate 38% of attacks on others, and 1% accounts for 74%.
