Some years ago, I collected a huge bank loan, got some Int'l investors, we cultivated grains, had a good harvest and also offtake from other farmers. We had around 1,000 tonnes in our warehouse in Kano.
Per my calculations if Maize price remains at 650k per ton, we would have around 19% net profit. If it goes down to 600k we'll just break even. If it goes below 600k. I have entered generational debt.
I did some investigation and I heard maize prices would go up, as a good guy I came online to tell my farmer followers not to sell bcs price would go up. I held my maize for 2 weeks and sold out my 1000 tons.
I was dragged for years! 😂😂😂
NaijaFarmer is hoarding maize, I was featured on all social platforms with my pictures everywhere, even Tinubu mentioned that some farmers are hoarding maize..
A year before, I had lost tens of millions bcs the price of Maize didn't move & harvest wasn't good. I was dealt double blow from production & market.
We sold our 1000 tons. Paid my bank loan, paid back investors & pulled out from production bcs an insider said Tinubu is planning to open border for maize importation. Everyone in production knows that policy will crumble local maize production totally.
Agriculture in Nigeria is volatile, unpredictable & lonely. You can do everything right & things will still go wrong.
Now, I have gone back to my first love, extension education & consultancy services. You see that production... I don wash my hand.

One of my greatest mistake in Life as a Farmer is being a FARMER. I shouldn’t have invested in a sector that is dependent on Government policies and bottlenecks. In my line of business,there’s no escaping Government inefficiencies. Nigerian Government will do everything in agriculture except solving problems. For more than 20 years farmers have been saying that we suffer seasonal Glut because we simply cannot individually afford Machinery for Egg Pasteurization. Government will listen to our complaints, lie that they are coming up with a NEGPRO scheme and go ahead to simply do the opposite of what was agreed. With high Electricity and Gas prices, investors are guaranteed not make their money back as Egg powder produced in Nigeria will fail to compete with Global market. Companies will rather import than buy made in Nigeria raw materials. State Governors are worse, they simply have no clue of what to do outside of using fertilizer as a political tool. They have refused to build or sustain any critical infrastructure (Dams, Health and safety of animals, meaningful collaborations or Training) The CBN under Emefiele refused to allow the Bank of Agriculture to do its job. With the growing insecurity and policy missteps farmers in Nigeria have little to no incentive to continue to run or grow their businesses. Don’t go into Agriculture, it’s simply not worth it.
