I've been practicing psychiatry for over 40 years, since my graduation from psychiatric residency in 1985. We still don't know the physiology of thought. Nearly all our diagnoses are concocted by our trade association, not discovered in a laboratory. And in 2018, the US Center of Disease Control released a seminal study documenting a 30% increase in the incidence of suicide in the United States from 1999 to 2016--a period of peak availability of psychiatric treatment. The response of the American Psychiatric Association was a cowardly non-response, obviously concocted to attract as little attention to the Study as possible. In 2020, the CDC reported that the suicide rate had increased by another 5%--a 35% increase over 1999. And again, no response from the APA. Do you dare to call that "clinical mastery"? I call it ignorance of what we are doing, grossly irresponsible cowardice, and abandonment of our clinical station.
