After 15 minutes of speaking with the rabbi very emotionally about the faithful lives we both lost from communities on 9/11, he wanted to hug me and in that moment it became a blessing. What was I to say, “Oh wait now….please stop”? Sometimes Christ’s love is shown most powerfully in compassion and shared grief. It is quite sad to hear accusations that such an embrace means I am compromising my priesthood. Some have even raised canons about prayer with those outside the Church. Let me be clear: I did not join in prayer nor seek a sacramental blessing. What happened at Ground Zero was not a liturgical act, but a human embrace in a place of national tragedy. As Orthodox Christians, we remain steadfast in our faith while also showing Christ’s peace and love to all people. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9).

At Ground Zero today, I was reminded that even in the shadow of unimaginable loss, God’s light shines through. This humble Rabbi saw me wallking and immediately gave me a big hug not as someone different, but as a brother. In that moment, faith met faith, heart met heart, and unity overcame division. Here, where the world once shook, we stand together….different paths…..same hope. “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.” (Psalm 133:1)

@EBasilion Montclair. It was amazing. Turned into a Whole Foods after acquisition many, many years ago. Then they opened another Whole Foods about 2 miles away. Both are always packed.

John Mackey is the founder of Whole Foods. Whole Foods was a big deal when it started. It brought what was until then a fringe health movement to the masses. Even as he scaled up, he continued to take bold risks while preserving quality, attention to detail and ethics. And then Jeff Bezos bought it. I have a lot of respect for the founders in the world who refuse to sell out. John Mackey sold out and Whole Foods has turned into sht.

There are 2 Cleveland Heights business that were at the top of their game, Mitchell’s chocolates and On The Rise Bakery that sold without selling out. They were sold to people who had soul in the game (each for different reasons) and the businesses are flourishing.

@EBasilion I just looked it up — even Craig Newmark sold 25% to EBay but he still has majority. But really interesting point you made. I was a fixture at a local Fresh Fields that turned into a Whole Foods. Both were groundbreaking back in the day.
