Personal news: Last week was my final one at The Baltimore Sun. It was an eventful few years in Maryland politics, and I appreciated the opportunity to cover a slice of them. Onto something new soon.

We’re urgently taking action to protect Marylanders from the immediate consequences of the government shutdown. We’re: 1️⃣ Keeping government programs running and state employees on the job. 2️⃣ Delivering protections to help Marylanders keep a roof over their heads, the lights on, and groceries in the fridge. 3️⃣ Expanding emergency resources for federal workers who are furloughed, fired, or asked to work without pay.

This shutdown will severely harm Maryland’s farmers and small business owners. It will disrupt funding for crucial benefits like WIC – which supports 183,000 Marylanders. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers and government contractors could miss paychecks — or see their jobs eliminated. ONCE AGAIN: Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress. They have the power to keep the government open.
