Our latest research, led by Senior Programme Scientist Niels Mogensen and published in Conservation Science and Practice, addresses this question. By analysing years of spatial data, we found a direct correlation: High densities of tourist camps negatively affect lion density.

The Mara has gifted us the best possible start to the year as we step into 2026. On 30th Dec. '25, Namunyak, a 5-year-old cheetah and daughter of the legendary Nebaati, emerged from her lair on the southern side of the Reserve with four cubs.

On 13th Dec, our oldest known female, Nora, was killed by a leopard in the National Reserve. Nora was approximately 13 years old. Over her lifetime she produced several litters of cubs, but only succeeded in raising a single male cub to independence in 2016. 🧵1/3
