They should be an independent agent who is not beholden to any particular insurance or investment company. They should be licensed to sell disability products from Ameritas, guardian, MassMutual, principal, and the standard. They should spend a substantial amount of time with you asking questions about your medical history as well as your program and potentially fellowship if you’re heading there. Many of them have specific programs (guaranteed standard issue, policies or GSI ) that may benefit you. The process should be and feel slow, intentional and thorough. If you’re looking for some people to interview, I can give you some names.

Biggest money mistakes I see physicians make: 1) not getting appropriate disability insurance early in their careers. 2) deciding that since understanding every facet of personal finance is too hard, they will learn none of it 3) pretending like the debt is not there 4) buying a home straight out of training, moving to a city and job that they have no prior experience or connection with 5) buying insurance products from the guy who came to their residency program to teach them about personal finance 6) being too afraid to invest so they just keep building up their checking account where they have ridiculous sums of money earning 0.01% interest 7) hiring someone from Northwestern mutual 8) getting disability insurance from some rando who emailed them 9) contributing to a Roth IRA, not realizing you can’t do that if you’re married, and you file your taxes separately or during a transition year to attending hood and your income breaches the threshold for direct contributions. 10) not getting there will and trust documents in order. (This is a pervasive problem that extends for years after training is over and you all need to take care of this ASAP.) 11) accepting and agreeing to an employment contract without having it reviewed by an attorney. Their lies the missed opportunity to negotiate adjustments in compensation, protected time, and other variables that definitely matter to you. 12) not reading or listening to free expert advice via books and podcasts 👋🏻 @PhysicianCents 13 not spending enough money 14) not saving enough money 15 ) not hiring a financial planner soon enough

One of my favourite patients showed up to clinic wearing this. She was born with an imperforate anus and her parents have the BEST sense of humour #pedsurgbestsurg

So proud of our PGY4, @MaramaraTaylor on her presentation with Dr. Chu at the Annual Southern Surgical Association Meeting 👏. They presented “Adherence rates to ACOSOG Z011 based on Breast Cancer Subtypes”. They were accompanied by our program director, Dr. William Havron.

2) Residents are both the back of the house AND the front of the house crew. They provide the bulk of the exceptional bedside care and keep the wheels of the hospital turning 24/7 with ALL of the phone calls, paperwork, conversations, and procedures they do for our patients. 2/6

Medical interns will be starting their new careers this week. I think it's important for the public to know a few things about our new colleagues: 1) In teaching hospitals, we work as a team; interns ARE physicians who learn by watching, then doing, with graduated autonomy. 1/6

Someone asked me what I wanted for #NationalDoctorsDay. I want Children to be able to go to school without the fear of being shot. Want to do something for Doctors’ today? Get off the sidelines of history, and have the moral courage to join us. Share if @ThisIsOurLane
