From the absolute inception of their relationship, he didn't believe in her and tried to manage her life from the shadows. Brillant that it came crashing down on him from the start.

@omer97332361331 @ayiearif13546 Both wrong? Subaru spent Arcs 1 and 2 keeping Emilia in the dark. He only survived Arc 2 because Roswaal saved him in the forest. He went into Arc 3 living on borrowed time, making Emilia 100% justified in setting a boundary to protect him. Breaking it just makes him a hypocrite

The episode basically shows that both Subaru and Emilia are in the wrong. Emilia is at fault because she doesnt take Subaru seriously. She treats him like a child and keeps pushing him around, never seeing him as an equal. She keeps trying to keep him at a distance, and that only triggers Subaru even more. In the end, Subaru cant handle being “pushed away,” so he does something to prove he belongs by her side. Or rather, he shifts the weight of his own actions onto Emilia by saying, “I did everything for you!” Subaru saying “I did everything for you!” parallels Petelgeuse saying “I did everything for Satella!” And when Subaru hears Petelgeuse say that in Episode 15, he feels disgusted with himself. Because he had acted like the man he hated most, like Petelgeuse. And that’s when he starts fixing those toxic behaviors.

Pinning the comms gap purely on Emilia is unfair. Subaru actively hid all arc2 threats from her and informed others. Remember the lap pillow? She begged him to let her in so they could be equals. Subaru failed to reach that equilibrium then.

@Gloryhastaken Hot take might be arc 1-3 Emilia > Rem. I happen to believe so because arguments have power. Since all of Rems arguments were erased, we're left with a bond forged by death. Whereas Emilia's argument is preserved, their bond is forged by life and both feel consequences.

The Crunchyslop translations are back. I don't know how they could bungle this line this badly. They somehow translated「誰が…殺されてやるか」as "So I'll just... get someone to kill me..." Not only is that such a basic line completely butchered, but it makes no sense in context either. It should translate to: "Like hell I'll let any of them kill me..."

Being saved isn't a happy ending in Re:Zero. Subaru could band-aid every obstacle alone until everyone survives, but he refuses. If you carry someone through all their struggles, you erase who they are, leaving a broken shell. "The Taste of Death" captures this perfectly

Arc 1 of Re:Zero is quite tragic. He saved the playground but lost his playdate with the girl he liked. Keeping it safe is its own reward, it's what the girl would have believed. But it's a heavy burden for the boy who alone remembers the sandcastle they built.
