@MarcGarneau Marc, Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities says this quote, while very much in line with Arendt's thinking and other writings, is not something she wrote or said. [i thought it could be from "the Origins of Totalitarianism" but didn't find it] hac.bard.edu/amor-mundi/on-…

The televised gathering in the White House of President Trump and his cabinet members bending over backwards to fawn all over him is truly something to behold.

@prinzadelbart Although I did not train for a Soyuz mission, I believe you're right. I think it's part of an automated search mode pattern (very sped up) that helps align the vehicle for docking.

To sum it up: President Trump is convinced his tariff strategy will work although he concedes there will be pain and it will take time. The crucial question is HOW LONG Americans will give him to lower their costs and create the jobs he promised, before their patience runs out.

Just finished reading « Is Earth Exceptional? » which asks the obvious questions: how did life come to be on Earth and are we alone in this vast universe. I learned a lot

@TreeBearsDeep That's just it. He isn't making history with something out-of-the-box. Think Smoot Hawley tariffs in the 1930s or President Mckinley tariffs in 1890. Neither worked.

What I find more difficult to fathom than President Trump’s ignorance of the consequences of his tariff policy (domestically & globally) is the fact that a majority of Americans elected him. He is clearly not a student of history, nor are, it would seem, a majority of Americans.

@richardgreene2 I don't disagree. However, many "non-disenfranchised" Americans also voted for him, knowing his intention to impose tariffs

I don't think this a mystery. A charismatic leader provided a focus for those who felt disenfranchised and excluded. They wanted to throw a rock at the system and Donald Trump was the rock they threw.

A few clarifications to your post, Mr. Garneau: 1) Trump did not get a majority of the popular vote, 2) about 6 in 10 Americans now oppose his trade strategy; and 3) Trump is aware of potential consequences but simply does.not.care.

@MarcGarneau What do you have against protectionism and taking care of citizens that elect you? The unconstrained free traders have had their way for quite a while. I don’t feel their results are a joy to behold.

@MarcGarneau Not a majority of Americans; not all voted. Of those who did, in terms of popular vote, less than 50%. Nothing to justify calling it a strong mandate.

@MarcGarneau Correction: Not a majority of Americans but a majority of voters, big difference. But yeah, I get it. The American experiment has failed.
