NATO’s chief just took sides in a war while pretending he didn’t. Mark Rutte publicly praised the US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Called them necessary. Said they “resonate with most European politicians.” (which is no longer true). Then, in the same breath, insisted NATO as an institution was not involved, just individual member states acting on their own. Then he went and coordinated 22 of those same member states to secure the Strait of Hormuz. The Secretary General has always been a political figure, not a neutral arbiter. No one expects him to be the UN Secretary General. But there is a basic threshold: you cannot publicly endorse one side of an active military conflict and organise the Alliance’s operational response to its consequences and still credibly claim your institution has no stake in the outcome.
