Sam’s story is amazing for sure, but those pictures are not of him. They are of Simon the Sea Cat, who was aboard the HMS Amethyst - which served in China following WW2. You can read about Simon in my book which you can buy on Amazon

This is Unsinkable Sam aka Oscar, a cat that served with the Kriegsmarine (navy of Nazi Germany) and the Royal Navy (navy of the UK) during WWII.⁣ ⁣ One of World War II’s strangest survival stories belongs to a black-and-white ship’s cat known as “Unsinkable Sam.” The cat was reportedly aboard the German battleship German battleship Bismarck during its first mission in May 1941. When the ship was sunk by Allied forces, more than 2,000 crewmen were lost, only 115 men and one cat survived. The survivors were rescued by the British destroyer HMS Cossack, whose crew adopted the cat and named him Oscar. Months later that ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat, killing 159 sailors, but Oscar survived again. He was transferred to the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, where sailors renamed him “Unsinkable Sam.” Fate struck a third time in November 1941 when Ark Royal was torpedoed and sank. Sam was later found floating on wreckage, wet, furious, but unharmed. After three ship sinkings in a single year, the Navy decided Sam had done enough sea duty. He spent the rest of his life safely ashore in Belfast. A portrait of “Unsinkable Sam” now hangs at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England, commemorating one of the most improbable mascots of World War II. © Reddit #archaeohistories

Sandy Koufax (90), Tiger Woods (50) and LeBron James (41) all celebrate birthdays today. I’m not into Astrology, but I’d like to hear what some student of the stars could tell me about that phenomenon.

Shit…I am so sorry man. Though I never met Copper, hearing him on the other end of the line during your segments with TK always made me smile, and I know he was the greatest of dogs. Sending nothing but good thoughts to you and the family
Jason La Canfora@JasonLaCanfora

Said goodbye to my best friend. Gonna be tough not having him curled up on me every night. Our sincerest thanks to everyone who ever asked about Copper or cared about Copper. He was a hoot. So much personality in a little dog. Please love animals as much as you can. RIP Choppy

@Jason_R_Burt I believe this is a photo of the bridge at Arnhem - and that should be Major Digby Tatham-Warter holding the umbrella. I could be wrong, but I also believe the bridge was renamed the John Frost bridge - named for the CO of the 1st Airborne

On this date in 1942, the US won perhaps its greatest victory of the war at the battle of Midway. There were innumerable acts of heroism that day, but one man stands out for me - Lt Commander John Waldron, commander of Torpedo 8 from the USD Hornet. A true American hero, who should be awarded the Medal of Honor.

And this is the Temple of Julius Caesar - where his body was laid to rest and then burned in a funeral pyre. Over 2000 years later, he is honored with flowers on his grave
