I am honoured to welcome Matt Jeneroux to our caucus as the newest member of Canada’s new government. Building a stronger, more resilient, and more independent country will require ambition, collaboration, and occasionally, sacrifice. I am grateful to Matt and his family that he will continue his service as a strong voice for Edmonton Riverbend in Parliament. For more than a decade, Matt has been entrusted by Albertans to help shape a stronger future. He was first elected to Alberta’s Legislature in 2012 and to Canada’s Parliament in 2015 — earning four consecutive mandates in the House of Commons. In Ottawa, he has taken on portfolios that are central to Canada’s economic strength, security, and national resilience — including as Shadow Minister for supply chains, innovation, infrastructure, health, and housing. He is a strong voice in international engagement and parliamentary diplomacy, having served as Vice-Chair of the Canada-UK Interparliamentary Association and Founder of the Canada-ASEAN Parliamentary Group, and building direct working relationships with lawmakers across NATO, Europe, Asia, Africa, the United States and the OSCE. As a new special advisor on economic and security partnerships, Matt’s leadership will contribute to strengthening Canada’s alliances and trade partnerships, advancing Canada’s leadership in global security cooperation, and building our strength at home. The world has changed, and Canada must change with it. This is a time to come together — and together, we will build a stronger future for Edmonton, Alberta, and all Canadians.

I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence.   I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens. Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other.   I have connected with Premier Eby to express my condolences, and with the Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, who is coordinating the federal response.    Our officials are in close contact with their counterparts to ensure the community is fully supported as best we can. The Government of Canada stands with all British Columbians as they confront this horrible tragedy.

The Conservatives are amending C-8 in order to require a warrant before the government intervenes when there is a cybersecurity threat. None of our Five Eyes partners have such a requirement. This will hinder our ability to rapidly respond to cybersecurity threats. I don’t like it, but I am sure Vladimir Putin does.

The old order is not coming back. Nostalgia is not a strategy. From the fracture, we can build something better, stronger, and more just. Canada is choosing honesty, strength, and action. That’s our path.

Hundreds of extra dollars will go directly to residents throughout Northwestern Ontario, from Fort Frances and Atikokan to Thunder Bay. The government is building a stronger economy for Northwestern Ontario while investing in our communities with immediate and practical support.
Mark Carney@MarkJCarney

We’re launching the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. That’s going to put hundreds of dollars more into the bank accounts of over twelve million Canadians, starting this year. We’re building a stronger economy, and some of the biggest payoffs will take time to be felt. So we’re making sure people have the support they need right now.

Yes to pragmatism. No to appeasement. Walking that line means walking a tightrope. The Prime Minister is doing a great job doing just that. Take a look at his speech today in Davos. I totally agree with the Prime Minister—the global middle powers, like Canada, need to act together. Together we are stronger than any one country acting alone. No single country, or person, is the arbiter of what is right or wrong. The vast majority of people, wherever they are from in this world, whomever their parents, whatever their background, grow up being able to distinguish what is right and what is wrong. For most of us—all the threats, and all the money, in the world, will not/can not, change that. Might will never be right.

Unilateral military action by any country against another, whether motivated by historical grievances, border disputes, or even well motivated compassion for the suffering of people living under brutal regimes, fundamentally undermines the international legal order. An order which has, for the most part, kept global peace since the end of WW2. Such unilateral action needs to be condemned. This does not however mean the international legal order is perfect or without need of reform. It needs reform- and collectively the world ought to be able to deal more effectively with regimes like that of Maduro’s.

I was very sad today to hear that Ken Dryden passed away. When he won the Stanley Cup as a rookie I became a huge Habs fan. The next year, 1972, the Rangers knocked the Canadians out of the playoffs. I remember the next day thinking life wasn't worth living anymore. Ken Dryden was a hero to me, and to many other Canadians, and doubtless to many non-Canadians as well. He was a hero because of what he accomplished on the rink for the Canadians, and because, like any real hero, he was an unwaveringly decent, thoughtful human being. Of course like any real hero Ken could do anything! and do it better than anyone else! He was successful as a lawyer, an author, a politician. I met Ken at a Parliamentary event celebrating Canada's legendary defeat of the Soviets in 1972. I don't know if our country has had a prouder moment than when Paul Henderson scored that goal. Ken was there, in net for us. Ken was exactly the same in person as he was in public. A thoughtful, caring, and really intelligent guy. My brother Justin was a big Ken Dryden fan. I always associated Justin with Ken- both were big, quiet, studious, and seemed that they could do anything. One thing that neither of them could do however was, of course, to be able to beat death. After my brother died a few years ago I asked Ken to sign a picture of him in net so I could give it to one of Justin's sons. Ken of course graciously agreed and my other nephew brought the picture to his house in Toronto. Today all Canadians lost one of our greatest heroes of all time. My condolences to his family and friends, my heart is with them. In death it is impossible to find any solace other than a very small way by remembering that Ken seemingly lived a great life. He made our country a better place. Also he made a lot of kids like me really, really happy for a while, and gave many of us some of our happiest memories. Thanks for everything Ken.

The best part of this campaign has been meeting people and hearing about their lives. Last night's candidates event was a great chance to connect with people and share ideas for our communities in Northwestern Ontario. Many thanks to the Thunder Bay Public Library for hosting such a great event!
