Even more than in the past, it is clear today that the proliferation of armed conflicts is often driven by the exploitation of oil and mineral deposits, with no regard for international law or the self-determination of peoples.

The Tijuana River is a public health emergency that’s gone unaddressed because it exists in a low-income, Latino community. This is environmental injustice in broad daylight, and it demands urgent action. @paloma4D1

•The U.S. Senate may hold a floor vote TODAY which would overturn a 20-year moratorium on sulfide-ore copper mining on 225,000 acres of Superior National Forest land in the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) Wilderness in northern Minnesota. The Boundary Waters is the most visited Wilderness in the United States.  🛶 Enjoying the Minnesotan/Canadian wilderness by canoe or other lesser watercraft is one of our nations greatest available pastimes, and one I have personally enjoyed my entire life. We must protect these public lands from the rapacious capitalists threatening to turn them into a poisoned wasteland. •This vote in Congress would open the door to copper mining at the headwaters of this entire ecosystem. This kind of mining produces toxic pollution, including acid runoff and heavy metals, that can contaminate nearby waters. •The Boundary Waters supports a major outdoor economy that sustains thousands of jobs and generates over a billion dollars a year - built on clean water and intact public lands. But this vote would clear the way for toxic mining that puts all of that at risk. It would also set a dangerous precedent, making it easier to roll back protections for public lands across the country, including wilderness areas, national monuments, and national parks.  •This is a defining moment. If you care about clean water, public lands, and protecting places we can’t replace, now is the time to speak up. •Protect the Boundary Waters, and vote NO on House Joint Resolution 140. Let’s save this treasured place for all of us—forever. on.nrdc.org/4csRkwi

BREAKING: The Senate just passed the legislation allowing the devastation of the Boundary Waters. The motion passed 50-49, and now goes to Donald Trump’s desk. The way Republicans passed this bill that prevents future administrations from issuing protections for Superior National Forest, so this pristine land will be exploited in perpetuity unless Congress intervenes to reverse this decision. The state of Minnesota can still block the Chilean mining corporation from operating in Superior National Forest and protect the Boundary Waters from pollution.
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

The Senate is about to vote on handing a national forest over to a foreign corporation. A Chilean mining company wants to develop a copper mine upstream from the Boundary Waters, a pristine wilderness. The GOP has to choose between a foreign corporation and their constituents.

Rep. Betty McCollum@BettyMcCollum04·
The Boundary Waters are a national treasure, and its pristine lakes and rivers must be protected for the benefit of future generations of Americans. The Republican Majority in the U.S. Senate voted today to strip away protections for the BWCA, allowing a foreign-owned mining company and serial polluter to begin a sulfide acid mine in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters. We don’t allow mining in Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion, Acadia, Glacier, or any of our nation’s revered national parks – and we shouldn’t allow it in the watershed of the Boundary Waters, either. One hundred percent of copper mines have failed, leading to polluted waters. This case will be no different. Because of this extremely short-sighted vote, our nation’s most-visited wilderness area faces the threat of permanent toxic pollution. Why? So Antofagasta, a Chilean corporation that owns Twin Metals, can mine American copper and ship it to China to be smelted and sold on the global market. Twin Metals has been lobbying President Trump and Republicans in Congress for over ten years to remove the protections from this watershed and renew their mine plans to extract American minerals at the expense of freshwater for future generations. The science-based evidence is overwhelming: The mineral withdrawal is the only way to protect this wilderness, which is home to some of the cleanest water in the entire world.

🚨 The Senate passed H.J. Res. 140, gutting Boundary Waters protections. This sets a dangerous precedent for public lands nationwide. We’re not done fighting. There are still paths to stop this mine. We'll keep you posted today about what this means and how you can get involved.

Please call your senator ASAP and let your voice be heard. Call 202-224-3121. Make their phones ring constantly and understand how ghoulish this is. Even if your Senator is a Republican and it feels useless call them anyway. Tell them what a stain on their legacy this will be
The Wild North@TheWildNorthTV

Protect the Boundary Waters FOREVER. This is America’s wilderness. Don’t let foreign mining interests pollute our pristine public lands for generations to come. Not this place - not ever. I urge you to call your senators now to help save the BWCA.: 202-224-3121
