Volume is the vanity metric the entire perp DEX category has agreed to lie about together 👇 Attached you see 20 Hyperliquid venues. One shared orderbook. User profitability ranges from 3.51% to 39.37%. (Source: @hydromancerxyz) This is a catastrophic stat. We've spent the last year debating which perp infra wins. Honest answer -> none of them. Orderbooks are a commodity. Matching engines are a commodity. Cross-margin, sub-accounts, oracle feeds all converging fast. What isn't a commodity is whether your users actually make money. Look at the spread: Phantom: 85k users, $37B volume, 17.64% profitable. Treadfi: $6b volume, 3.51%. Metamask: $7B, 15%. Axiom: $12B, 22%. Same chain. Same execution. Wildly different outcomes. This is the metric that should make VCs nervous about volume-optimized perp DEXs: Volume is bought, incentives, points farms, MM rebates, washed volume. Your fee revenue is literally a measure of how efficiently you're grinding your userbase. Profitability can't be faked. It's downstream of UX. Defaults. Order types. Liquidation behavior. How you onboard a beginner. Whether the app makes a trader better or just lets them blow up faster. The venues producing profitable users will compound -> Profitable traders deposit more, trade longer, refer friends, survive crashes. Unprofitable traders churn in 30 days and tell their groupchat the platform is rigged. LTV in perps is downstream of one variable nobody is tracking yet: did the user actually make money. This is what our team obsesses over currently. Not volume, not TVL. Whether the trader who walked in last quarter is still here, and whether their account is bigger than when they started. The next cycle of perp platforms won't be ranked by orderbook depth or fee revenue but by what % of their users are still alive. Follow me to find out how we make this happen.
