Shakira Austin is stepping up in a big way. Since earning a spot in the starting lineup, the former Ole Miss star has put together a breakout run, averaging (19.3) points, (8.7) rebounds, (2.0) steals, and (2.3) blocks over her last three games. Last week, she posted back-to-back 20-point games for the first time in her career, including a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds against Atlanta, followed by 21 points in a win over Dallas.
Her biggest impact, though, came on defense. In a close game against Chicago, Austin denied Angel Reese’s go-ahead layup in the final minutes—leading directly to a clutch and-one from Brittney Sykes that gave Washington the lead for good. She then added another critical block on Kamilla Cardoso to help seal the victory.
That stretch revealed just how promising Washington’s frontcourt duo of Austin and rookie Kiki Iriafen can be. Add in another sensational rookie in Sonia Citron, whose backcourt versatility continues to stand out, and a veteran Brittney Sykes playing the best basketball of her career, and the Mystics are starting to build a solid foundation.
Sure, their recent wins have come against teams near the bottom of the standings, but Washington will look to build on this momentum with a challenging slate ahead—facing Minnesota, Las Vegas, and Dallas this week.
Alana Beard is arguable the greatest shutdown defender in the history of the league. There needs to be more love and attention given her way on the amazing career she had!!

@BubbaUNC I enjoyed listening to your interview on WFNZ tonight. Title IX does not protect female athletes from inequitable treatment at most universities.
