I think this paper will become a game-changer for studying the microbiome. Matthew Schmitt and I found that a simple neural network, when trained on paired sequencing and functional data, can infer functional group structure directly from data. Preprint -> biorxiv.org/content/10.648…

🚨 Must Read. La biología moderna sigue diciendo que los seres vivos son “máquinas complejas”.
Un filósofo de la biología lo desmontó en 2013 con un argumento demoledor:
Los organismos NO son máquinas.
Tienen propósito interno (vivir su vida).
Sus partes dependen del todo.
Su estructura cambia constantemente para seguir vivos.

La universidad no nació para producir competencias inmediatas, ni para la empleabilidad.
Nació como gimnasio del pensamiento, laboratorio de ciudadanía.
La universidad no está en crisis. Lo que está en crisis es la idea de que su misión es formar expertos híper-especializados para certezas que ya no existen.
Es fundamental volver al origen: enseñar a pensar, a comprender y a dialogar. Formar para la incertidumbre.
En la era de la IA, el trivium -gramática, lógica y retórica- vuelve a ser central. Los algoritmos ejecutan tareas, las personas deben entender, juzgar y dar sentido.
