6 years ago yesterday, we took Thomas on his final journey. There is nothing in the world that can prepare you for putting the lid on your child’s casket, knowing that you’ll never see them again. Yesterday, I worked a night shift on the paeds intensive care unit. The last night I spent on PICU, until this week, was the night that Thomas died. This week has been challenging, rewarding, and exhausting. I have truly found my purpose and passion, and can’t wait to start as a NQN on the unit. Yet I realise that there is so much trauma that I need to work through to be the best nurse I can be for my patients. I do it for T. My reason for wanting to be and do better. My reason for caring for my patients like they’re my own.
