Bobbi Gibb, right after she became the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon in 1966. Earlier that year, Gibb had received a letter rejecting her from the marathon, stating that women were "not physiologically able to run a marathon." The Amateur Athletics Union limited women to races no longer than 1.5 miles (2.4 km), and the Boston Marathon organizers refused to accept the liability of a female competitor. Undeterred by this rejection, Gibb decided to participate anyway. On race day, she wore a blue hooded sweatshirt over a black swimsuit and her brother's Bermuda shorts, concealing herself near the start line. After the race began, she waited for about half the runners to pass before joining in, seamlessly blending in. Soon, the male runners realized Gibb was a woman. Contrary to expectations, they supported and encouraged her. Gibb removed her sweatshirt and completed the race in 3 hours, 21 minutes, and 40 seconds, outpacing two-thirds of the male runners.
