We're all fed up paying over the odds for our electricity, but there are many reasons for these high prices. One of them is the grid.
A stronger grid means cheaper electricity.
#BuildourGrid
Last year we spent more than €230 million on imported energy. At the same time we were losing clean wind energy that was generated right here in Ireland — in part because of our weak electricity grid. 1/2
During this energy crisis, it's Ireland’s wind turbines that are shielding us from the worst effects. In September, the price of electricity on the windiest days was almost €100 lower /unit than the monthly wholesale average.
In the last 24 hours, wind met 67% of Irish electricity demand. The high was 90%. Total generation met 106% of demand and averaged a 63%/37% split between wind and all other sources. Wind peaked at 70%.
Going through the data just now and it looks like yesterday - Monday, September 26 - had the highest ever wind/demand average for a September day, with wind power meeting just under 68% of electricity demand. At one point in the morning, it hit 89%.
A million euro an hour leaving Ireland to buy imported fossil fuels, Dr Paul Deane tells #WEIOFF22, as he calls for a New Energy Vision for Ireland from the Oireachtas to make our country energy independent.

'You don’t achieve policy by saying something enough. We need a plan - from the Oireachtas - which can be our north star over the next 30 years. We need everyone to encourage them to deliver that plan.' - Dr. Paul Dean @MaREIcentre#WEIOff22

“The world is starting to treat female athletes like female athletes.”
The RTÉ Soccer panel examine the changing views towards women's menstruation in sport, and how kit designs to reflect that are inevitable.
Now we need to turn our focus on price. The average auction price was half the price of the nearest fossil fuel competitor but we can do much better with the right policies in place. We need a Government task force focused on reducing the cost of renewables in Ireland asap.
Huge respect for Duggee and everything he’s accomplished but, based on the amount of time the Squirrels are left to their own devices, has anyone checked to see if he has his Childcare Badge?
