Amidst the disturbing scenes in #Dublin city center yesterday, one uplifting tale emerged – the heroic actions of Caio Benicio, a Brazilian native and @Deliveroo worker. Witnessing a terrible attack, he dismounted his bike, intervened, and undoubtedly prevented further harm.

Dublin City Centre, 9:30pm, 22nd November. Walking home from work. Just 24 hours before the riots. 24 hours before people sought to burn their own city to the ground. Ruin their own services and attack the people who serve them. My thoughts are with the children, woman, entire school, parents and those who bravely stepped in to halt the attack in progress. THAT is who I am thinking of. 🕊️🇮🇪

Paid a little extra attention to the basil this year and made several batches of fresh pesto, delicious in pasta with fried fresh peas and kale. It needs to be picked regularly to stop it going to flower and keep producing. A real taste of summer, will keep this up for sure!

The rockery bed we built next to the shed last year filled out a lot and bloomed all summer. The sage were a lot bigger than I expected and took over. The Sweet Williams smell divine. The wisteria at the back is struggling with the competition. Millie enjoys her catmint too!

Pumpkins are a particularly important to us and we grow loads of different types. '22 was our best season yet, still haven't managed any giant ones though. There were some promising ones but I think the sun cured the Atlantic Giant too early and the others suddenly rotted.

The most significant development of the '22 growing season was our first success with muskmelons and watermelons! It was an ideal year with strong sun and heat in July and August. Watermelon is a marginal crop here even under cover but muskmelon should be reliable most years.

Tomato picking atm. Growing Sungold, Bodeglut, MoneyMaker and San Marzano. Our neighbour had to give up his polytunnel last year so grew a few extra plants for him. MoneyMaker really living up to its name, loads of big juicy fruit!

Back in 2020 and 2021, we planted some beds of willow for weaving, also known as a Salley Garden. The Irish for willow is saileach and the Latin for the family is Salix, I'll let the linguists argue over the exact etymology otherwise.

Another quick job at lunchtime was to check round the pumpkins and put sand/tiles under the growing fruit. This should help prevent rot and discourage pests. It'll also allow movement to protect the vine as the fruit swells and settles.

Quick check round on my lunchbreak and found a cucumber vine fell off the support! Working remote really make a big difference to the small, daily tasks just by spending a little time in the garden every day. Would be too tired in the evenings if I commuted.
