Looking over coverage of women in ‘Irish Historical Studies’ over the years. First woman to figure was, predictably perhaps, St Brigit. Subject of an article in issue 2 (Sept. 1938).

Countdown to 260th anniversary of Ireland's first census 🧮. 5 March 1766 - Irish House of Lords orders a census of householders noting 'which are protestants and which are Papists'. They gave only 61 days to do the job! virtualtreasury.ie/item/NAI-PRIV-… Keep an 👁️on our posts @NARIreland

Very sad news. I have known Deirdre for over 30 years since I was an undergraduate at UCD. Her insights into foreign policy, especially during the 1930s, were first rate.
Irish History Students’ Association@IHSA1950

The IHSA is greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Deirdre McMahon, one of the stalwarts of our association. Deirdre was instrumental in keeping the association going over the years. She will be sorely missed (arrangements to follow).

We were delighted to host the Taoiseach during his visit to Cambridge today. Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice welcomed the Irish Prime Minister @MichealMartinTD to celebrate the appointment of the University's first-ever Childers Professor of Irish History, Alvin Jackson, at @TrinCollCam. The new Professorship will further support Irish history at Cambridge and help build closer academic ties between Ireland and the UK. Read more about the visit 👇 bit.ly/4rmzvoU

The postal option from NI has become extremely unreliable too. After two attempts went astray earlier this year I ended up driving to Dundalk to post the application from within the jurisdiction and that worked. Won’t post from here again.

There is a compelling practical case for an Irish passport office in Belfast. None of the historic objections endures to any significant extent. It is increasingly hard to explain this situation when there is such an office in Dublin, in Cork & in London. m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion/column…

Your safety and wellbeing are our top priority. That's why the University campus will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday 27 January, due to the amber weather warning across Northern Ireland.   Where appropriate and possible, teaching will move online for our students and your School or Centre will be in touch to let you know about the arrangements in your area.   Where necessary, some staff will continue to work on campus to carry out crucial roles, delivering and supporting essential services.   Student support services will be available remotely and Queen's Accommodation will remain open as normal. The McClay Library will close from 7.00am on Tuesday morning but aims to reopen at 9.00pm that evening.   See you back on campus soon!

@DanMulhall The foresight of those behind ‘Investment in Education’ in the 1960s has contributed to this long-term (many other factors as well of course)

2025 was a very productive year. Publishing 3 books, 4 journal articles/book chapters, starting a new company History Link which had a great first year, starting The Irish History Boys podcast with ⁦⁦@Tim_Mc_Garry⁩ and completing my last year /1

Interesting piece on 50th anniversary of the UK’s 1975 Sex Discrimination Act. The equivalent order for Northern Ireland was introduced on 2 July 1976. Many of us have benefitted from its provisions and protection.

Irish historians - and those interested in compensation for civilians injured in conflict - this is an excellent article by Daithi Ó Corráin @DCUHist_Geog on the rich and woefully underused Rebellion Victims Committee files in @NARIreland
The Historical Journal@HistoricalJnl
