The CMC was pleased to spend time last week with Mayor Lew Conner of Two Harbors, Minnesota. The city has a compelling vision for its breathtaking waterfront that balances public access, environmental restoration, historic preservation, and commercial shipping. We also appreciate Mayor Conner's robust support of Great Lakes shipping ⚓ Fun fact: Millions of tons of Minnesota iron ore are shipped from Two Harbors every year, making it a critical link in North American production of steel 🔗 Pictured: Mayor Lew Conner and CMC President & CEO Joshua Juel in front of a 4-8-8-4 Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railroad steam locomotive (a surviving example of the most powerful class of steam locomotives ever built!) #MarineDelivers #TwoHarborsMN #GreatLakesCities #LakeSuperior #GreatLakesShipping #MarineTransport #MarineEconomy #LakeCountyMN #ExploreMinnesota #MinnesotaMiningAssociation

The Chamber of Marine Commerce (CMC) extends congratulations to the Port of Québec for being granted the designation of a 'first port of arrival' capable of receiving international marine containers ⚓ This expansion will generate regional economic benefits and enable greater trade in our nation. It is also directly responsive to a CMC-commissioned report by Aviseo Conseil, which highlights how the CBSA @CanBorder can better support ports to generate tremendous benefits for national supply chains (see: heyor.ca/DhVVjj). Many thanks to the Government of Canada and especially @CanadianPM Mark Carney, Minister @gary_srp, Minister @stevenmackinnon, and Minister @JoelLightbound for significantly advancing their vision of building the strongest economy in the G7 today 🇨🇦 Read: heyor.ca/iithD4 Pictured (left to right): CMC’s Director of Government and Stakeholder Relations, André Chabot, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, Joël Lightbound, and CMC’s President and CEO, Joshua Juel.

CMC thanks QSL for providing a tour of their operations in Quebec City yesterday, and an overview of their extensive operations throughout North America. Vice President, ESG Policy and Future Initiatives Claudine Couture-Trudel provided excellent insights into how QSL successfully works with stakeholders in many different locations while maintaining excellent community relations, and the evidence of the company's success in this regard is the many awards they have won, including being recognized as one of Canada's Best Managed Companies and Canada's Most Admired Corporate Cultures.

#DidYouKnow? ⚓ ♻️  In 2009, Canada and the U.S. jointly proposed with France what became the North American Emission Control Area, setting the world’s strictest marine sulphur emission limits under the IMO. By 2012, all ships in Canadian, U.S., and French waters had to comply to these standards—either by adopting the use of cleaner fuels or by installing emission-control technology. Canada’s “fleet averaging” program, plus the removal of a 25% import duty on new ships, helped domestic shipowners invest in modern vessels. By 2020, instead of the 15 ships originally planned, 23 new ships were built, cutting air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. Fun fact: A 2021 study found sulphur dioxide levels in Canadian port cities dropped significantly, showing cleaner air and the impact of continued shipping innovation 🚢 🌱 #MaritimeHistory #EcoShips #GreatLakesShipping #StLawrenceShipping #EcoFriendlyShipping #MarineDelivers #StLawrenceSeaway #Biofuels #ShippingInnovation
