The Pike Effect: The Invisible Wall That Stops Us A simple experiment. An uncomfortable result. In an aquarium, scientists placed a transparent glass wall: on one side, a hungry pike; on the other, small fish. The pike attacked immediately. Bang. It hit the glass. It tried again. And again. Until it got hurt. Eventually, it gave up. Then, the glass was removed. The fish swam freely. Right in front of it. Even brushing past its mouth. But the pike never attacked again. For it, the barrier was still there. It wasn’t real. But it was enough. It died surrounded by food. This is known as the Pike Effect: when learned fear becomes a mental prison. When we stop trying not because we can’t… but because once, we couldn’t. The real question isn’t whether the wall exists. It’s this: What if it’s already gone?
