SIK Pre-Season Player to Watch: Ava Smith, a standout athlete from Valley Heights High School, is coming off an incredible junior season and looking to carry that momentum into her senior year. A true all-around threat on the volleyball court, the 5’9" outside hitter and middle back was named the 2024 Kansas 2A State Player of the Year after leading her team to a 32-11 record and a runner-up finish at State. She was a force at the net and in the back row, finishing the year with 513 kills, 372 digs, 51 aces, and 29 blocks, bringing her career kill total to an impressive 1,160. She ranked top 15 in the entire state across all classes in total kills, kills per set (5.40), and receiving percentage (96.27%). Smith also shined on the basketball court, earning first team all-state honors from Sports in Kansas. “My team and I are beyond excited for this upcoming season,” Ava said. “Our goal is to build on last year’s success by staying focused, pushing each other daily, and never settling for less than our best.” Athleticism runs deep in the Smith family. Her dad, Eddie Smith, played college basketball at Cloud County and UMKC before competing professionally in Poland. Her sister Kayla was a multi-state champion in track, while her brother Elijah earned state titles and honors across football, basketball, and track. #sportsinkansas Photo: Amanda Parker
