@JakeKeas @FloWrestling It’s not about leaving it to the official. Control is control - and he did not have control beyond reaction time. Simple as that

@MarkFPenguin @FloWrestling Agree to disagree sir. But the key here is, he left it in the officials control. Make the escape clear and this isn't even a discussion. That was his biggest mistake.

Was this loss of control? Ty Martin (Don Bosco) holds on for the 1-0 win in the 1A Iowa State Finals. #statechampionships

@JakeKeas @FloWrestling Where they end up at the final whistle does not apply to control. He had already lost control prior to that point. You can award it at about the 3-4 second left mark - or consider it a “held” call and award it as time expires. Either way a no brainer escape in my opinion

@JakeKeas @FloWrestling As a WI official, where the NFHS rulings apply - you are 100% incorrect. You can quote the rule book all day, but you cannot grasp the application of the rule in real time. This is an escape all day. Loss of control - go to OT. Not even a judgment or 50/50 call

Ok. Here is my explanation as to why I agree with the call. First lets look at the NFHS definition of an "Escape." "An escape is when the defensive wrestler gains a neutral position and the opponent has lost control, beyond reaction time, while one point of contact of either wrestler is inbounds. If there is no action at the edge of the mat, the referee shall stop the match." This definition is particularly important in scramble situations like this. The advantaged wrestler could very well be under the disadvantaged wrestler and still be in control as is the case in this scramble. How? Well because he has control of a leg or arm at various points in this scramble. As long as he keeps that control of the leg or arm, there is no change. Now here is where the BEYOND REACTION TIME is the key part of this definition that is important in this case. What is reaction time? Well there isn't a clearly defined amount of time that is outlined in the rulebook, but it is generally accepted by most referees to be somewhere between 1-2 seconds. In this case, the wrestler does BRIEFLY not have control of an arm or leg (hands on the mat pic guy). That much is true, but that was only the case for a brief amount of time. Timing becomes EVERYTHING here. This was less than a second that both his hands were on the mat and the next second he was back on top and the match time was over, so that was well within the reaction time window, amd the end of the match time ABSOLUTELY comes into play here too. You cant see the clock at the end of that, but the officials are VERY aware of that time as well. A really great wrestling official once told me this: "If you are unsure about an escape, think about it this way, if he didn't stand up or didn't break contact from the advantaged wrestler, its because he couldn't. And if he couldn't, then its because he didn't get an escape." I hope this clears up my thought process as to why I agree with these officials, and while I cant speak for these officials or their thought processes, if they are officiating a state championship match, they are probably pretty great officials. Not to mention there are two of them, and both of them talked about it and they ended up in agreement. The no call was the right call in my humble opinion. Feel free to ask me more questions if you have them, but please be cordial if you just have a comment. Like I always tell my wrestlers: This is an emotional sport. We will win and we will lose. Either way we have to represent the sport we love well, no matter the outcome. The same goes for the fans.

I’m taking some time off from the show - it’s been a really tough last few months and I need to step away. About as low as I can remember, but I’ll be OK. No idea when I’ll be back. As always, it’s OK to ask for help when you need it, and you’re not alone.

The most discouraging thing I saw in the Wisconsin vs Maryland wasn’t even the game. It was this picture, that was taken in the 4th quarter with 9 minutes left to go. I’ve never seen @CampRandallStdm this empty during a game in my lifetime. I feel for the fans…..

@hunterbonair Anyone that's played little league knows you can't have white on your glove...Cash calls it out and it's removed. Why do Milwaukee fans think they are above rules? Oh wahhh our guy hit the catcher and to hell with rulebooks all runners should advance...no wonder Counsell left.

@NateElevated @adamtirapelle So you penalize the top kid by taking the other kid off his back? Bloody nose same thing. It stinks to lose the point, but you don’t think there should be any repercussion for taking someone off their back?

@MarkFPenguin @adamtirapelle Bottom guy get’s bloody nose . Extra point awarded to top guy . Completely unnecessary . I have never seen a kid fake an injury to get out of a pin . Must happen a lot more in Wisconsin if you think it’s necessary.

I give wrestling and the NFHS credit. Trying to make real positive change to push the sport forward. I don’t know if it’s needed in HS like it was in college, but it’s here now. We’ll adapt. But on a side note, there are going to be some wicked fast TF’s 😳😏
NFHS@NFHS_Org

‼️ 2024-25 Wrestling Rules Changes HS wrestlers will be inbounds with only one point of contact of either wrestler inside or on the boundary line. This fundamental change was one of six major changes impacting almost 30 rules. Full release here: nfhs.org/articles/parti…

@NateElevated @adamtirapelle Terrible take. Go ref a youth tourney to understand how someone is “injured” and taken off their back. It’s 1 point. No barring on the match. Could remove a potential pin when someone is just freaking out and not injured

We, as wrestling officials, should not/cannot bite the hand that feeds us. We finally get 1 point of contact as a rule. We are really going to complain about the 3 pt TD? You want to worry about how many arbitrary “points of contact” are in bounds? Come on guys.

@adamtirapelle 100% agree with you, hate the 3 point takedown even more. Nearfall I have no problem with. As an official I honestly believe the 3 pt takedown creates even more stalling. 1 takedown, play the edge the rest of the match. Saw it a lot already in college this year.

I’ll die on the hill of us going the wrong direction with the 1 supporting point in bounds rule. We want LESS wrestling on the edge. This creates more. 😞

@tmusales31 @adamtirapelle Call stalling appropriately and there are no issues. Worry less about the call and worry more about how we got to that position. Change you mind set on stalling to think about aggressive and you won’t have an issue. 3 pt TD has NOTHING to do with more stalling

@adamtirapelle Tell me you know nothing about wrestling without telling me you know nothing about wrestling. You want officials to be consistent? Stop making them think about arbitrary “points of contact” in bounds. Want less edge wrestling? That’s on the athletes. Teach aggressiveness
