i think star trek is a useful case for distinguishing woke from progressive. old trek operates by presenting various philosophical ideas in an even-handed way, then working through the ideas from various perspectives before arriving at a provocative conclusion. this is often progressive, but it's not really woke, or at least not what i think of as woke. woke media has a different tone and vibe - it isn't trying to persuade you, it's trying to you feel bad for not already agreeing. woke media is designed, intentionally or unintentionally, to polarize the audience as quickly as possible so that only people who already agree with you will continue watching.

i'm actually not sure that nu trek is properly woke by this definition. i didn't feel like wokeness was the problem with starfleet academy, for instance (i just thought it sucked). but i do object to the idea that star trek has always been woke

As a millennial....we absolutely did. How is this even a question? Dating apps ruined dating and we were the main demographic to first use them. Hook-ups were normalized before us, but this specific brand of dating culture most definitely was not.
