We recorded it first but the powers that be decided not to release it as a single right after Kicks, as had been planned. Boyce & Hart were ticked off and wouldn’t hold it, so they brought our recording to the Monkees, who covered it note for note and ad lib for ad lib.

I was fired from my job in a gas station in 1962 for singing along to a Contours song (broom handle=mic) instead of working. My boss’s parting words were, “This ain’t the Ed Sullivan Show, kid!”
Today in 1967, The Raiders appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show.
