Very cool for kids from #Arlington who grew up huge @Patriots fans during the Grogan, Hannah, Stanley, Smith, Tippett, Tatupu era ... and no, not Arlington Texas and not Arlington, Virginia ...

The finest writer at the Post, period. Not the Sports section, the entire news org. I'm sick of so many tweets invoking Boz/Tony/Mike. They were great. But @barrysvrluga is best sports columnist in the nation. Working for the best Sports page in America. Right now. So stupid.
Barry Svrluga@barrysvrluga

So, finally, some thoughts on @PostSports: I, like so many of my colleagues, was laid off today as part of the Post’s implosion of its Sports department. I ache for my colleagues, so many of whom are friends and so many of whom I’ve worked so closely with over 22+ years here.

So sorry to learn of the announced demise today of the sports section of The Washington Post. This Post photo, by the award winning photographer Carol Guzy, graced the front page of the sports section in the spring of 1991. It came with a long feature story on DeMatha.

The great @RealMikeWilbon joined @JunksRadio and offered his thoughts on the @washingtonpost: ““It’s a death. It’s a death. I’m not overstating it. I called The Post home for 30 years and 6 months…”

FACT CHECK: 1/2 Correct ... times do change, but the failure of those who lead/led storied brands such as Sears and the @washingtonpost to adapt to change is on them, not changing times. Sears, for example, should have downsized, reduced their physical footprint a lot earlier ... and it failed to do so. The Post is leaving money on the table because they don't understand the full business ...

At some point these media organizations cut so many people and so many positions that what is left is unrecognizable. With the Washington Post that is a massive shame since the brand was oncer as good as gold.

The difference between me and @ChrisCillizza ... from bullet point 6 of his substack post: "If you know me and my work, you know that I am an optimistic person." You see, Chris and I worked together at @rollcall ... the launching pad for so many great journalists ... It was a killer's row of reporters and editors ... we've lost a few to time, but there are still many of us floating around ... you would be surprised ... Anyway ... Chris was the "optimistic person" ... if you know me, I was the "pessimistic person" ... but we both worked hard towards the same goal ... and dare I say, we were successful most of the time ... read & subscribe to his substack ... it helps demystify the journalism business.

I tried to write an honest analysis of what happened at @washingtonpost. Yes, Jeff Bezos deserves a big share of the blame. But it was a series of dumb decisions -- and a refusal to take risks -- over a 20-year period that led to what happened Wednesday. tinyurl.com/3h45v349

I do wonder what most of these billionaires are thinking ... reality is you are doing to die at some point ... you can't take the money with you but what you may leave behind for your heirs is STILL an ABSURD amount of money AND a LEGACY that will do so much for the coming generations ... dumbfounding to me because it doesnt cost anything other than the ink from a pen and a piece of paper. But as good friend @AliVelshi once said to me in the 2008 Elections: "But what do I know?" ... as we would laugh at all of the "analysts" who thought they were smarter than the average American or something like that.

@M_Errigo sorry to hear the news ... it is the @WashPost loss, not yours ... @JanCBS - I agree with you and the Post clearly was not able to see the revenue opportunities in covering local sports ... in covering local communities - the margins might not be explosive, but it is solid dollars and helps knit the community together. I just hope where some people see despair -- others see opportunity ... it wasn't the physical newspaper that makes the Post - it is the people who fuel it everyday ...

It is incomprehensible to me that @WashPostHS is no longer. No more Top 20s and “players of the week,” no more stats and scores. And no longer will we read of the honor so notable that our best DMV players proudly include on college bios: “Washington Post All-Met.” Thank you for all the stories that brought our different neighborhoods and rivalries in the DMV together over our shared love of sports. This is more than a blow. It feels like a thread unraveling in the fabric of our community. 💔
Michael Errigo@M_Errigo

Sad to say I was also laid off by The Post today. Lucky to have spent 10 years covering HS sports for my hometown paper, writing about hundreds of my neighbors. Thanks to anybody who made time to talk, sent in stats or complained about All-Met selections. Truly, I loved it all.

Jimmy - I remember the Roll Call days at the Dubliner where you talked about taking on the Post … In addition to your thoughts …I think you need to take into account Live/In the moment. Did I say Live LiveLive? And be distinctive and broaden scope of coverage; …. we are a company town but there is so much local news … I would add to your list of changes of creating a “super journalism school” that takes J-school kids out of the classroom (you don’t learn how to stare down a county commissioner in a classroom) and put them on local beats … the DMV has so many interesting stories - ask @mikeallen about the NNK - that go unreported …. I learned reporting at a small, local newspaper - I learned how to be a killer from @bresreports … it wouldn’t cost much more and the training these kids would receive …

My breakfast crack at it…You’re on the clock… Mission: Restore @washingtonpost to its glory  • 2 reporters on every federal agency, small WH team w/ 3 top-tier reporters and governmentwide specialists in federal rule-making and contracting and spending • Entice Post stars who left to return as service to their city, profession and nation.  They talk a big game on X - call their bluff!  • Two reporters on each of top local biz sectors: defense, tech, HC, lobbying & influence, etc.  • Buy @PunchbowlNews to anchor Hill. Make @apalmerdc CEO and you head of Hill + Sports + smack-talking • Bonus thought: buy @theinformation and make @Jessicalessin EIC.  DC and Silicon Valley are essentially merging.  • Poach @peterbakernyt as DC news chief… • Work w philanthropists or @propublica to fund investigative public trust w stories made available to other outlets upon publication. Team w Post staff reporters on most consequential projects.  Ask @PostBaron and @realBobWoodward unit and train a new generation of diggers and grinders… • Reporters in top dozen global capitals covering interplay w US/DC - make @IgnatiusPost central to this  • Fortify War unit  • 2 reporters on each of the pro sports teams w daily newsletter by team. Lure @SallyJenki back for sweep… • Go hyper local w local w coverage by parts of city, DMV or neighborhood (other than DC govt) • Sunday print only or preferably none at all. AI-first for all operations beyond reporting, editing, sales, leadership.  • Scrap opinion: city has enough noise. • Two tier pricing: current lowest price for consumer and $1000+ for insider coverage produced by above team that’s not of broad citywide interest.  • Set up as future profit share for all employees to be incentivize w shared business mindset and goal of permanent durability.  • First step last: sell it to someone who will do this… then declare war on @Politico to retake what we took and make peace w/ inevitability and distinctiveness of @Axios… what say you fella?

Still baffled: why would a disinterested, disengaged, distracted @washingtonpost owner hire a seemingly disinterested, disengaged, distracted CEO, suffer perpetual criticism and $ loss?  Lots of rich people would buy it, and even more execs would gladly run it.  Show me a single entity anywhere at anytime doing anything that worked without strong, engaged leadership. Kinda matters. I bet @dongrahamdc1 or Kara Swisher would pull together a group to take it over. Bloomberg could easily swoop it up himself. Just sell it.
