Just to be clear, there were no 2,000-word features on a local basketball team. More than anything, it speaks to the lack of engagement with the sports department from whoever this unnamed person is, someone who likely helped decide the fate of dedicated reporters and editors.

The only other story that came close was on a high school player who broke the Maryland scoring record, led his team to a state championship and went on to play at Michigan State.

I went back and looked... In all of 2025 we had just one feature on "local" basketball that exceeded 2,000 words: A profile on Wizards' first-round pick Tre Johnson. It was 2,022 words.
