@bugEcology love it. thought you might enjoy some of these Cajun French variants: "mouche à miel" for honeybee, "fouille-merde" for dung beetle, and "bête à Bon Dieu" for ladybug

Of all the figures I looked at this week this might be my favorite one. Damn. I think I am regressing 😂

@KarenMSmith_bio @kassthefish It really is scary. We aren't sure what to do with the 4-month old or the 2-year old. Daycare was the plan but that feels risky. Good luck with whichever option you choose.

@kassthefish And we open public schools on August 17th. I am seriously scared about how this will go. Already, it's going to be hard sending them every other day and working from home when they are off. The alt plan is to do all online until Jan, with keeping your kids on task for 5 hrs/day

My friend from Wisconsin texted me & said NPR reported Lafayette and southern Louisiana have had a huge surge of COVID cases & she hopes I'm safe. People here refuse to wear masks or actually socially distance. It's frightening. Hospitals don't have enough beds. We're not okay.

Beautiful day in the garden! With this little helper, we should have plenty more passion fruit on the way!

This is an important thread for those in departments that still require the GRE. Be aware of what we are requiring from our students.

@CardinalVampire that's exactly right. it's a defense mechanism meant to scare predators. happens when the chrysalis senses vibrations

At first I thought she was going to pop, but it's looking like that's not the case. I think it might be in response to the baby caterpillar crawling on the surface, some sort of defense mechanism? Anybody have any insight? #Butterflies

@CardinalVampire I think Pachodynerus erynnis, or "red and black mason wasp". Solitary, not aggressive, beneficial predator. 😀

Not a plant, but one of my favorite #garden items, our bee-hotel! Was lucky to get this little lady working on her brood; can anyone identify? You can also see remains of a bee that couldn't make it out of their cell :-/ #bees #pollinator

Hey! Everyone stuck inside (or not in the subtropics), let's go on a virtual garden tour! To start, check out our currently 3-foot tall Mammoth #Sunflower (Helianthus spp.). We are growing them at the windows as organic privacy screens, & for the #pollinators! #gardening #Flowers

Absent from all of these Giant Asian Hornet articles is that it's a predator that evolved to attack non-native honeybees. It's presence & establishment is a consequence of a broken food system which relies on & celebrates non-natives, while breaking down natural peocesses.
