In my opinion, it is both political and provincial. They are obviously a left, leaning publication and very anti-DeSantis. They do not want to see a huge iconic public/private partnership succeed and DeSantis get any credit whatsoever for helping build an incredible Legacy project here in Tampa Bay. It is also very provincial IMO. They love sewing division between St Petersburg and Tampa. They obviously fought a long battle vs the Tampa Tribune and were called the St Pete Times and long desired the stadium be in St Pete. Many at the TBT still believe if this fails it will come back to St Pete. A failed location for a baseball stadium. MLB will never allow it. Romano and their editorial board have long supported the disgraced former owner who was forced out of bseeball because nobody trusted him and for good reason. Their robust endorsement of Sternberg and the failed St Pete plan that was a $2.4 billion boondoggle shows the incredible hypocrisy when it comes to this project where the new owners are investing $8-10 Billion in the community of PRIVATE funding! It’s crazy.

When talking about the best stadiums in Major League Baseball, Tropicana Field will not top any National lists. The building is imperfect, but its foundation is strong.  It’s a place rooted in hope and erected upon optimism.  When the Florida Suncoast Dome opened, it did not have a main tenant. It was a house to many, but a family to none. That changed in 1998. It didn’t take very long for this blooming fan base to deal with a draining stadium debate. Wedged between money, politicians and owners was the baseball year-after-year. A place where moments were created on the field and memories made in the stands. As time moved forward and lives evolved, this ballpark never changed.  Until it did. After decades of discussions about replacing Tropicana Field, its destruction came prematurely.  But just like its foundation, it stayed sturdy through turbulent times. A city that dreamed of luring a professional team assembled enough energy and haste to squeeze a few more years out of this building. Rays fans want resolution to this stadium saga.  They want another home. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have love for the Trop and everything its history represents. Opening Day doesn’t just mark the start of another season in St. Petersburg, but the realization that closure is around the corner. After 561 days, there’s probably a thought in most of us that took this building for granted. Aesthetically it is not the prettiest. The roof is far too low and the upper deck is a ghost town. But it’s home. And for some of us, home will always have a safe place atop our lists.  It is great to be back. #RaysUp

As the @Buccaneers jump in the public funding cauldron some food for thought. The @RaysBaseball in 2008-10 averaged about 23K per game which would be conservatively low in a new iconic Tampa stadium location but even using that number, they drew 1.8 Million for the season. Even in Brady’s best year the Bucs drew 551K total. So in terms of economic impact it’s not close. Rays all day with so many more games. I’m not saying the Rays are more important, but it’s not like we should just dismiss them because the Bucs finally came to the table. We lost a legend today, the great Lou Holtz passed away. I had the great opportunity to chat with him last year on his 88th Birthday and celebration of his 1988 Notre Dame Natty. Incredible Coach, Father, Speaker, Patriot. RIP Lou! The Lord is getting his ear bent tonight!
