Several Indian media outlets have circulated videos claiming that Hindus are being targeted by ‘Islamist forces’ in Bangladesh. Analysts say that while there have been attacks on minorities during the political unrest, the media is exaggerating the scale.

BANGLADESH 🇧🇩: @amnesty’s Secretary General @AgnesCallamard urges Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to end the ongoing crackdown on protesters and cooperate with the UN to conduct a thorough, effective, independent, and impartial investigation into the deaths and injuries that have resulted from crackdown. She reiterates that Amnesty’s findings findings point to unlawful use of birdshot against student protesters, dangerous use of tear gas in enclosed student spaces and unrestrained use of lethal firearms, such as AK-pattern assault rifles, by security forces. They also point to violence unleashed by Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL), the student wing of your the ruling party, first against unarmed and peaceful student protesters in the University of Dhaka and then against students receiving medical treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Additionally, the mass arrest and arbitrary detention of student protesters has further perpetuated a climate of fear. All the people detained or arrested solely for exercising their right to protest peacefully must be unconditionally released. #ProtectTheProtest #SaveBangladeshiStudents Read the open letter with the full list of demands here: amnesty.org/en/documents/a…

Bangladesh: As protests continued today, reports of death of nearly 100 people including 14 police officers is extremely concerning. The state has a duty to create an enabling environment for peaceful assembly. As such, it must take necessary, reasonable and proportionate measures to de-escalate the violence at protests,in order to protect the right to protest. Amnesty calls upon law enforcement agencies to act with restraint to avoid further serious injury and loss of life. They may only use the minimum level of force necessary to bring a situation under control where doing so is strictly necessary and proportionate. Even in instances where some parts of a protest turn violent, law enforcement must assess the situation on a case-by-case basis with use of force only where absolutely necessary and only against those engaged in violence. It must be strictly proportionate to the situation, which means authorities must not cause more harm than they seek to avert. #ProtectTheProtest #SaveBangladeshiStudents

BANGLADESH 🇧🇩: @amnesty has verified further video and photographic evidence which shows that Bangladeshi security forces have continued to use unlawful force against student protesters. Our findings point to abusive use of birdshot, dangerous use of tear gas in enclosed spaces and unrestrained use of lethal firearms, such as AK-pattern assault rifles, by security forces. We urgently call for an independent and impartial investigation into all human rights violations committed by security forces, including the high death toll of protesters to be immediately conducted.
