@JosephKahn There's a bit of truth in this analysis. Many other factors as well, but certainly, there has been an exclusionary element to the messaging of some artists who feel that they need to wear that kind of attitude for credibility. A new form of "keeping it real" that is more pointed.

There has been no rap song that charted top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 since July 2025. For years it was common knowledge in the record business that the main customer of rap was white kids. Yet over time, rap kept messaging to the white kids that they were not wanted. Listening to rap was a strange disassociative act where the n word was all over it but nobody could actually say it, though singing along is what you're supposed to do with music. You can listen, but you can't touch (or say). White kids played logic circles trying to lionize artists that clearly disdained them - "they not like us." The kind of fun party rap that Run DMC and LL Cool J popularized stepped aside for a political, separatist strain. The white kids got the message. They kicked off their Nikes, bought ONS, switched genders, went to Bieberchella.
