@Tjhawk07 @NicoleCantelme @CraigHarrisNews True, but the account into which money is deposited does not change the source of the funds (taxes vs parent payments). Private schools likely deposit tuition paid from taxpayer ESA funds and additional out-of-pocket tuition payments from parents into the same bank account.

@MartinCharlieAZ @NicoleCantelme @CraigHarrisNews Just to help you out…. The vouchers show the bank account as the Maricopa County Treasurer. So as the AG Op. 10-003 says, “Although the District uses only the non-taxpayer sourced funds, these funds are deposited with the county treasurer and constitute public funds.”

Since @CraigHarrisNews won’t do line-by-line on public schools, I had to. Deer Valley USD hides their line-by-line spending like it’s classified. I dug into our peers to see the real hypocrisy. Let’s see some real scrutiny on admin discretion with our money. Thread incoming….

@BellaNo75933255 @alegria_do @CraigHarrisNews @12News They use the revenue from code 525 to pay for the millions in student travel. Don’t let them mislead you it’s only from candy bar sales. ESA participants do not have the option to create revenue off the system.

Governor Hobbs’s Proposition 123 renewal plan should be a no brainer for Arizona. It increases funding for schools with no tax increase and begins to address years of school building underfunding. State legislators opposing the plan are hurting the schools that they represent.

@NicoleCantelme @Tjhawk07 @CraigHarrisNews I understand that view, but think that most disagree. A recent news article was revised to remove the “taxpayer dollars” label from funds raised by optional fees.

Republican plan would send license plate fees to Turning Point USA to memorialize Charlie Kirk, per @ArizonaMirror. (Correction: Earlier version of this story incorrectly described funding source.) azmirror.com/2026/02/20/rep…

@MartinCharlieAZ @Tjhawk07 @CraigHarrisNews I disagree. It’s all taxpayer money—that’s how our government entities are funded. There isn’t a separate originating source. If I choose to make a donation to the drama club or buy popcorn at a high school football concession stand—it’s still taxpayer money.

@NicoleCantelme @Tjhawk07 @CraigHarrisNews In a sense, but definitely not equivalent to ESA funding. Someone recently called special license plate fees collected by ADOT “taxpayer funds”, but I think that most agree that optional fees for a specific purpose are different than funds from sales/income/property taxes.

@Tjhawk07 @NicoleCantelme @CraigHarrisNews Are you certain that these purchases were made with taxpayer funds? There should be an account code associated with each purchase that shows which funds were used. The first three digits are the fund. For example, 530 and 525 represent donations and fees paid by parents.

@realnickkupper @azcapmedia I think @azcapmedia is still referring to just getting on the ballot, but for voter initiatives rather than candidates. I believe that school board candidates are also not able to use the online signature portal to get on the ballot.

@azcapmedia I would argue that getting your name on a ballot is one thing, but getting yourself into office is much more significant and thus requires higher scrutiny of who is actually voting.

Capitol Media Services 📢 Telling it like it is
So here's the question. If this online signature portal is so good and doesn't require signature verification, why won't lawmakers extend that to the initiative process? Or is it that some don't want to make it easier for people to make their own laws?
Republican Party of Arizona@AZGOP

🚨🚨Get our team on the ballot! 🚨🚨 Click below to use the online signature petitions. You can sign for candidates up and down the ballot, it is fast, it is secure, and the best part is that your signatures are essentially challenge-proof. SIGN PETITIONS HERE >>> apps.azsos.gov/apps/election/… If our candidates run out of time they will have to pay signature collectors, and that can cost them $10-15 per signature. You can save our Republican candidates a lot of money by doing your part today. Thank you for helping the team win in 2026! (Hopefully the link is working now)🙄

ESA growth is mostly coming from lower income zip codes. Overall proportion still favors higher income zip codes. Oct. to Dec. 2025 vs. 2026 zip code median income: ESA growth rate Under $46k: +22.9% $46k - $75k: +20.5% $75k - $105k: +19.6% $105k - $134k: +15.5% Over $134k: +9.9%

Public schools are a public good. And so many of them serve their communities first and foremost. It is frustrating to see the “government” monicker given to these schools by many choice advocates. They seem to want to tear down the institution even though so many of these schools serve as the lifeblood of their communities. Thanks for pointing this out @MichaelPetrilli

@matthewladner Our funding formula in AZ is a great foundation for this. I think it was a mistake to add existing private school students to the formula due to limited state resources, and parts of the formula still need to be leveled between districts and charters, but we’re not far off.

@realnickkupper @RinoLivesMatter Getting to 90% from public school would take 350,000+ more students switching from district/charter schools to ESAs. So far, after four years of universal eligibility, less than 30,000 have switched. The ESA program will never come close to breaking even as is.

@RinoLivesMatter Well from a fiscal perspective, once 90% of ESA enrollment is made up of students who used to go to public schools then the state will break even financially. If that enrollment exceeds 90% it will actually save the general fund money. Currently we’re a little over 50%.

I’m not following this too closely, but three obvious questions come to my mind: 1. What is the AZ Auditor General’s Office saying? Have they been presented with these findings? 1/3

@CraigHarrisNews @JoeDanaReports @12News Since there are no asset tracking or asset disposal requirements for the ESA program, it’s not clear how ADE would enforce the handbook prohibition on reselling items like this.

@realnickkupper @willhumble_az @azcopinions Why not post your corrections/clarifications to the op-ed here? Better to have public policy conversations in public and accessible to all than behind closed doors. No expertise in this area, but don’t understand why you wouldn’t just defend your bill in a public forum.
