La Ley 20.450 declara el 5 de marzo de cada año Día Nacional del Fitomejoramiento. Esta fecha fue elegida en conmemoración a la llegada de Alberto Boerger al Uruguay en  en 1914, iniciando con él los primeros trabajos de fitomejoramiento en el país.  El objetivo de la Ley es rendirles homenaje a todos los productores, investigadores y demás personas vinculadas al fitomejoramiento uruguayo y a su impacto positivo en nuestra sociedad y economía.
