Saw a U18 session before my own skate last night here in Edmonton. 1 instructor, ice littered with devices and 25 skaters running mindless reps for an hour. Hockey is expensive enough these days and as skills instructors/coaches, we need to provide far more value than this…
@JamesGronau@DaveDawson7 There are certainly players at U15 JPHL who are stronger than players who played in U15AAA this year. Maybe not top liners, but certainly would have increased the depth of most of the teams in Edmonton.
I've had so many @ during the season about the watered down U15AAA in Edmonton.
Partially due to academies, JPHL.
Is it time to condense the 3 #yeg clubs (MLAC, CAC, SSAC) and make 1?
@DaveDawson7 Calgary is also starting to feel the hit now that the academies are popping up down there. Prep is definitely above local club AAA, but that’s mostly due to no boarder restrictions. Open the boarders and at least one team will be strong.
There are good teams out there. Top @AEHL_HA PeeWee AAA team finds out. More games against teams that are strong like this benefits players and development. Too many teams in the AAA Realm at the PeeWee Bantam levels in the province.
Lethbridge is 25-1-2 in league, GD of +135

@ReviewOfHockey Disagree. I ask my players to shoot into pads to create opportunities. If they give assists for hitting off skates, then rebounds are also fair game. No possession change.
@Eags37 Don’t forget the parents. If you focus on developing all the players but the team is losing. Parents will demand change. The parents care about wins and losses way more than the players do at youth levels.
What could we see from the #CSSHL ?
Speculation time - what you got?
- National Championships - might need a few more eastern teams
- Agreement with NCAA?
- Continues Female Expansion nationwide
- alignment with TIER1 USA
*tournament cooperation etc
- Peewee (U13AAA) expansion

@gordmccallum I’d allow progressive at U11 if I had my way but U13 is something I think people would accept.
At least it gets them thinking about it and learning to scan and read the danger.
@MartyNeighbour Yes, this system works well.
Honestly, I think North/South is safer at u13 than u15 just due to the physics. Way too many kids and "good" players with their heads down who graduate to contact and can't see their surroundings until it's too late.
Hockey theory:
More kids are getting hurt / going to get hurt by not getting hit enough, than by getting hit more often.
They're not prepared. We're actually making them more vulnerable.
@coacharel FOMO is real and parents ego also plays a part. Everyone feels good saying “My kid plays AAA”. Even if that kid plays 5 minutes a night and would be better served playing AA or whatever level suits them at that time and place.
The amount of high level hockey people who have reached out today on Mite AAA is hilarious.
Literally the only people who think elite hockey for 8 year olds is a good thing are the people offering it.
Actually, check that. Half the people offering it know it’s wrong but feel like they can’t compete if they don’t.
Youth hockey in a nutshell.
