Happy birthday to my twin brother and me. There is something about birthdays that forces you to confront time. It goes beyond getting older and reaches the realization of how much a human being can change while still remaining the same person at their core. Sometimes I think about how many versions of myself have existed within one lifetime already, the child who observed everything, the teenager full of questions, the young adult trying to prove herself to the world, and the version of me now slowly learning that life is less about proving and more about becoming.
The older I get, the more I realize that growth is deeply layered. You become stronger by surviving what almost broke you. You become softer after understanding pain. You become wiser after discovering how little certainty life actually offers. Somehow, despite disappointments, delays, unanswered questions, moments of hopelessness, and moments of doubt, human beings continue to hope. I think that is one of the most beautiful things about life.
This past year showed me that transformation may not always be visible. Some changes happen internally, in the way you think, the boundaries you set, the peace you protect, the things you no longer tolerate, and the version of yourself you slowly choose every day.
Today, I am grateful for another year of life and for growth that cannot always be measured publicly. For the lessons hidden inside difficult seasons. For the people who stayed. For the prayers that carried me through moments I did not always have words for. For the ability to still dream, still love, still hope, and still become.
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” - Lamentations 3: 22–23
Birthdays now feel less like a celebration of age and more like an acknowledgment of survival, evolution, grace, and becoming. That is perhaps what life truly is, continuously growing into newer versions of ourselves while still carrying traces of who we have always been.
