“See ball, get ball.” It’s that simple when Enzo Shahrvin asks how he can make this Purdue team better. Rebound the ball. And he does it at an elite level. He turned pro at age 18, debuting in France’s Pro A league. The past two seasons, he’s played for Paris Basketball in both Pro A and the Euroleague - the second-best basketball league in the world, behind the NBA. When you watch Enzo for the first time, his girth, wingspan and vertical pop out immediately. He’s not an offensively skilled player, and that’s fine, because Purdue doesn’t need that this season. It needs what Enzo Shahrvin is - a bully on the boards. Purdue has guys who can score and pass and “shoot the hell out of the ball”, as Braden Smith put it. Meaning, Enzo could average 0 ppg and still leave his mark on this team. No one is pushing him out of the paint (6’7, 235) and few can jump with him. He is built like someone combined two Mason Gillises in a lab, and traded his three-point shooting for a 40-inch vertical. I read someone comp him to Arizona’s Toby Awaka, and I like that comp from a size perspective, but Shahrvin is far more athletic, at least vertically. If you’ve watched any of his highlights, Purdue hopes Shahrvin can add his toughness, size and rebounding acumen to this roster. With his strength and athleticism he should be a plus defender for us. When he was switched onto guards like Omer Mayer and Carsen Edwards in Euroleague, he displayed quick feet and stayed in front of his man. He can sag a bit given his wingspan and if a guard gets by him he still has to finish, knowing he’s gonna have to put it high off the glass with Shahrvin closing quickly and high. Should be a good plug-and-play defender if Purdue needs to stop a bigger wing-type from getting to the rim, for example. Due to his skillset, I don’t see him playing anything but the 5 on offense - setting screens and catching lobs (not a bad gig). I’d guess 10-15 mpg but who knows, obviously will be more than that if no one else can rebound. Look what Purdue was able to do offensively with Furst out there. I don’t think Shahrvin will be an issue at all for that side of the ball in the minutes he’s in. From my limited research, his teammates love him and he has a great work ethic. He’s an intense competitor and plays with power. Seems to me like a low risk add with a decent potential return if his rebounding numbers translate. You know back-in-the-day-NHL when teams would sign goons to keep opposing teams from messing with its star player(s)? Don’t think anyone’s gonna mess with Purdue’s roster full of underclassmen too much - particularly its young bigs - with Shahrvin waiting in the wings. Dude is a mountain. And I write all that just to finish with this: we don’t even know if he can play lmao. His visa finally got approved last week, we know that. But can he practice? Can he play with the team in Canada? If he does, Purdue likely was told he was, or will be, cleared. Highly doubt Painter will play a guy, or even let him practice, unless he’s been cleared, even in the no rules Wild Wild West.
