Cognitive conflicts can extend beyond one’s internal confusion. We can also be contradicted by loyalties to tribes, virtue signaling, moral posturing, etc.

A culture that normalizes sheltering from embarrassment (i.e., valuing egotistical consistency & group signaling more than logical humility) might understandably produce actors that prioritize their reputations above reconciling with information.

In some cases, attachment to gossip positions might explain more of selective exposure and confirmation bias than any cognitive bias (i.e., political polarization might sometimes be better understood as social dissonance).

Language is technology. We act like operationally-defining things is easier than it really is. We don’t act like there are as many definitions as there are. We also act like there are less languages than there are. Culture is more complicated than we give it credit for.
