Amniotic fluid safeguards and supports your baby in the womb while playing a vital role in developing their respiratory and digestive systems. During pregnancy, your baby grows within an amniotic sac, a protective membrane forming in the uterus about 12 days post-conception. This sac contains fluid that cushions, regulates temperature, and aids in organ development. In the womb, babies rely on the placenta for oxygen and nutrients. Without air, they continuously swallow and inhale amniotic fluid, as seen in a 13-week ultrasound video, which helps form and strengthen their lungs and digestive system. Early in pregnancy, amniotic fluid is mainly water from the mother’s body. After around 20 weeks, as the baby swallows and expels fluid, it becomes mostly fetal urine, mixed with nutrients, hormones, and antibodies.
