It has been one year since the first pro-democracy protestor was executed in connection to the 2022 revolutionary uprising in Iran. One year since #MohsenShekari was hanged by the regime for protesting for freedom. One year since we woke up to the wails of his mother screaming for her son— a sound that replays in my head, even in my nightmares. Mohsen, at 23, believed a man should never come home empty-handed. As the man of his house and supporter of his family, he worked tirelessly to provide and to save up enough money for a PS5, but he never achieved his goal. His family was told not to speak out about his arrest, and he would be released. Instead, he was hanged. His sham trial lasted only three weeks. December 2022 marked one of the darkest months of my life, witnessing the regime’s killing spree of Iran’s youth. I questioned how they could get away with it with impunity. To this day, the regime continues its killing spree. I hate that my people are being murdered. I harbor deep anger toward the regime for their actions. Yet, the anger from those moments last year fueled me to do more. It changed me and gave me the courage to begin legislative advocacy to amplify the voice of freedom-loving Iranians to anyone who would listen. Their memory was not in vain, and it never will be. Each fallen hero lives on in all of us. I fight every day for you, Mohsen.
