Why do we use suspensions? What would we do without them? What do students believe will make them safe and help them learn? What resources do we need to support students?

Yet, we can also learn new ideas from this past. Activists during this time sought to abolish suspension and instead build different forms of accountability and cooperation. We might use their ideas to ask new questions and form new policies:

This study powerfully captures how educator discretion produces inequality through discipline. It's excellent work! I want to add to it by offering some historical context about why and how educator discretion became entrenched in the issuing of suspensions.
