🚨🎙️ | Marc Cucurella on leaving Chelsea for Real Madrid
“After everything my family has been through with my son’s diagnosis, football stopped being just about football for me.
There was a time when I judged every decision by trophies, contracts and ambitions. Now, I judge them by something different: what is best for my family.
Chelsea were incredible with us. During some of the most difficult moments of our lives, the club gave us support, understanding and patience. I’ll never be able to thank them enough for that. They stood by me not only as a footballer, but as a father.
But when Real Madrid came calling, it made me think about the future. My wife and I spent many nights talking about it. We thought about our children, about the support available to them, about the next chapter of our lives and what environment would be best for our family.
My son has taught me more than football ever could. He has taught me courage, resilience and how precious time with your loved ones really is. Because of him, I no longer make decisions out of fear of change.
Leaving Chelsea broke my heart because the fans were with me through everything. They celebrated my highs and supported me during my lows. But sometimes life places an opportunity in front of you and you have to be brave enough to take it.
Real Madrid was not a move motivated by money or fame. It was a decision made by a husband and a father who wanted to give his family the best possible future while continuing to challenge himself at the highest level of football.
Chelsea will always be part of my story. But my son’s journey taught me that sometimes the hardest decisions are the right ones, and that’s why I chose to begin a new chapter in Madrid.”
