Bringing one drug to approval runs roughly $1.4B in out of pocket cost (DiMasi et al., 2016). At that price nobody gambles on a dataset they cannot verify. Which is why "more data" was never the answer for health AI. Verified data was. Researchers, is that the read from where you sit, or am I oversimplifying?

The asymmetry is the whole thesis. Reading biology is now a solved, well-funded race between trillion-dollar companies. Owning and trading it is an empty field. The demand side is being built at enormous expense. The supply side, the actual humans, has no seat. That is not a technology gap. It is a market-infrastructure gap. Provenance, consent, quality, liability. Build those and the author can finally sell a page.

Every big tech company is now racing to read the language your body writes. Google trained a model on a trillion minutes of it. Samsung calls it a structured biological language. Apple, Fitbit, Oura, all building the same reader. Notice what none of them are building. The part where the author gets paid. We spent a decade teaching machines to read human biology fluently. Last July, Chugai, majority owned by Roche, committed up to about $250M in milestones to license an AI platform. They were not buying a molecule. They were buying a model trained on human datasets. Update on my night job. Turns out the company I work for while unconscious just announced it can now do the work on-site, at my body, without shipping me off to a warehouse first. Great news. Efficiency is up. I am still not being paid, and I still never applied, but the commute my data used to take is shorter now. Progress, technically. They are building foundation models on it. Google's SensorFM did the same on a trillion minutes from five million people. The reading problem is being solved by the biggest companies on earth. The ownership problem is being solved by nobody. That asymmetry is the whole opportunity.
