Finally, there is a national discussion about the unsustainable nature of the teaching profession. It shouldn't have taken a global pandemic and an intense spike in burnout for the topic to get attention, but so be it. However, there are two trends I am seeing that are concerning: 1. Solutions are being crafted for educators rather than with educators. Consequently, we will run into the same implementation gap that has plagued K-12 educators for years. 2. We are frequently dancing around the problem. Much of teacher burnout derives from the fact that teachers don't feel equipped with a teaching model that allows them to succeed in the classroom. They hear the buzzwords, they sound compelling in theory, but they have no pathways to bring them to life in their classrooms. Most solutions fail to address how teachers can redesign their classrooms to unleash their time and reduce behavior challenges. Until this is addressed, burnout will continue.

Fixed-pace learning isn’t what’s best for students. It originated out of convenience not effectiveness. It’s the status quo in most classrooms because educators aren’t given an alternative approach. But self-pacing is possible, even within the constraints of K-12 education.
