Hi Matt, welcome back from Japan - it looked like a great trip. I absolutely love that place!! Yes your right and that will most definitely happen over time. But in the shorter term the concern the RBA has is how far does inflation and inflationary expectations rise before that happens.

RBA rate decision just two hours away. The rates market is pricing in around 18 basis points of tightening today, which translates to roughly a 72% probability of a 25-basis-point hike. That would lift the cash rate from its current 3.85% to 4.10%—marking the second consecutive increase and the first back-to-back hikes since the long and painful tightening cycle of 2022–2023. Looking further out, the curve embeds approximately 71 basis points of cumulative tightening by the end of 2026. This aligns closely with expectations for three 25 basis point hikes in total this year, which would push the cash rate to 4.60%—its highest level since October 2011. The statement is expected to highlight the extreme and elevated uncertainty around the Middle East conflict, with the final “Decision” section expected to be virtually identical to last months – “The Board will be attentive to the data and the evolving assessment of the outlook and risks to guide its decisions. In doing so, it will pay close attention to developments in the global economy and financial markets, trends in domestic demand, and the outlook for inflation and the labour market. The Board is focused on its mandate to deliver price stability and full employment and will do what it considers necessary to achieve that outcome. Today’s policy decision was unanimous.” - The AUDUSD trades flat on the day at .7068/70ish. - The ASX200 is also flat on the day trading at 8583 after giving up 50 points of early gains. - IRM2026 trades 3bp lower, last at 95.58 - IRZ2026 trades 1bp lower, last at 95.30.
