🚨 BREAKING! ARTEMIS II DELAYED TO MARCH FOLLOWING WET DRESS REHEARSAL
NASA has formally concluded the first Artemis II Wet Dress Rehearsal and the agency is moving off the February launch window and now targeting March as the earliest possible launch opportunity for the first crewed Artemis mission.
With more than three years between Space Launch System (SLS) launches, teams fully expected challenges and that is exactly why the wet dress rehearsal exists. This full-up prelaunch test is designed to uncover issues on the ground, not on launch day, and to maximize the probability of a successful and safe mission.
What happened:
During cryogenic tanking, engineers worked through a liquid hydrogen leak at a core stage interface, requiring multiple pauses to warm hardware, allow seals to reseat, and adjust propellant flow.
All tanks in both the SLS core stage and the interim cryogenic propulsion stage were successfully filled.
Teams executed a terminal countdown to approximately T-5 minutes 15 seconds, when the ground launch sequencer automatically halted operations after an increase in the hydrogen leak rate.
Orion closeout operations took longer than planned, including additional work on a valve associated with crew module hatch pressurization.
Engineers observed intermittent audio communication dropouts across ground teams and cold-weather impact sto some cameras and equipment.
Importantly, teams successfully demonstrated updated Orion closeout purge procedures, using breathing air instead of gaseous nitrogen to better support safe crew operations in the White Room.
What's Next:
- The agency will conduct a full data review from the wet dress rehearsal
- Troubleshoot and mitigate each issue encountered
- Complete required repairs and updates
- Conduct an additional wet dress rehearsal
- Target March launch window once readiness is confirmed
