New column for @managingmadrid: I break down Real Madrid’s true financial position—beyond the headlines. Is the stadium debt a ticking time bomb? Are concerts a disaster? Look to cut through the noise and provide clarity for fans: managingmadrid.com/2025/5/2/24421…

Felt like this was the first time in nearly 2 seasons where the team has shown the mental fortitude to overcome adversity. Turned the result around twice, going behind and giving up an equalizer, dealt with refereeing controversy, and dug in over the final 10 minutes to secure the result.

In contrast to the below thread, here is what I like about Arbeloa: As corny and cringe as some of his comments can be, he is “un hombre de la casa”. He is as much a Madrid fan as you or I — in fact, I’d argue he knows the club’s history, traditions, and culture better than 90% of fans. Some may say that means little when coaching an elite club, I disagree. Especially at Real Madrid. Let’s see how he plays his cards following the re-integration of Mbappe and Bellingham, but his bravery in recent games to make the hard decisions and the bold calls early has been refreshing. Playing the best academy prospects has been a long time coming for this club. The development of academy prospects + young players like Huijsen, Arda, Mastantuano (when fit), is in alignment with the club’s transfer policy.

More thoughts post Xabi Alonso’s sacking: There are two sides to every story. Florentino is being vilified by different sectors of fans and media. Rightly so, in many regards. Cannot condone how Xabi was humiliated in the press, never backed, and the players were allowed to get away with their tantrums. Do it all privately, behind closed doors. But… from Florentino’s viewpoint, he is managing the biggest sport entity in the world. A team and project can be in “development phase” but it still has to win. That’s what this club demands - right or wrong. Despite playing here, I cannot help but come away with the feeling that Xabi never truly understood the club culture and ethos. Read between the lines on the media leaks. After the City game, despite putting together a great performance and competing, with several players publicly backing Xabi Alonso in the pre and post match press conferences, Florentino was reportedly irate. There was talk that Xabi would be sacked the next day despite the better image. Why? Because Xabi and the players were ‘content’ with just competing. That’s not what this club demands. I think Florentino pretty early on felt like Xabi was not a cultural fit.. My complaint? He should have cut ties earlier. Sometimes you make a bad hire, if that’s the case then move on quickly — don’t drag it out. Reports that have cited Xabi’s camp claim he wanted to continue but was also “relieved”. You could see the energy was sucked out of him the last few months. It was a bridge too far for Alonso, a step too soon in his career. We all know, what works at other clubs just doesn’t seem to work at Real Madrid.

More convinced than ever that Real Madrid cannot win the UCL with Vini and Mbappe in the same XI. Mbappe would not replicate the amount of work, nor the effectiveness of that work, Brahim put in over the two legs. Then you couple that with Brahim’s ability to play between the lines, act as connective tissue, move out to the right midfield when required—it would be an entirely different outcome with a different profile in there. This isn’t to discredit the talent of Vini and Mbappe, it’s once again pointing back to the needs for different skillsets in the team. Mbappe is 3x Brahim at several other facets of the game, but that’s not what this team needs.

Arda nearly scored a goal from halfway in his debut season, where it hit the crossbar. Imagine this won’t be his last.

Poner canteranos es la única manera de ver que pueden sumar para el primer equipo, bien y valiente Arbeloa por apostar por ellos.

Total of 8 players from La Fabrica in this game, has to hit a record maybe from the 70s? Carvajal, Fran Garcia, Thiago Pitarch, Gonzalo Garcia, Yanez, Palacios, Manuel Angel, Diego Aguado.

Love Arbeloa’s insistence on playing academy prospects. It’s refreshing. We have seen so many managers in the past overlook them despite injury crisis’ or lack of signings.

Finally seeing some respect for Ferland Mendy on the timeline. It’s about time. Too many wrote off one of the best defensive full backs in the game. Key part of 2x UCL winning teams.

Best 45 minutes from Fede Valverde in his entire career. Best 45 minutes from a Real Madrid player in over 2 seasons. Absolute monster, put the team on his back. Wasn’t just the goals— he did everything from covering for Trent to making runs in behind and staying composed on the ball. Set the tone for his entire performance with that tackle 30 seconds into the match.

To prove this team has turned a page under Arbeloa and truly can win La Liga, then they need to turn around this match in the second half. One of those games that you look back on over a league season if you’re able to grind out the win.

Elite talent isn’t enough. You still need veterans with perspective, role players who accept limits and know their limits. Many within the squad aren’t as good as we thought they were. The reality is some hard decisions need to be made this summer. They may not be good decisions from a commercial perspective, but the right decisions from a sporting perspective. This is salvageable. The model can still work but it needs to be less stringent and open to different profiles: technical profiles, age curves, role expectations, etc.

Real Madrid’s decline over the last 18 months goes beyond tactics or a manager. It’s not one player that is the issue. It’s not one bad transfer window. It’s a variety of different reasons and some of the cultural issues at board level weigh heavy. I can’t help but think about the “delayed bill” from a squad building model that looked ideal even just a few years ago. The Youth Transfer Policy was a resounding success but has now become part of the current decline.
